Chance Prophet Interview. By P.Staniforth November 2004.
I love this job. I really do. I get to interview big names, I get to interview friends; and I get to interview people who I love to watch. Is there really anything better? Im excited about this interview, because Im a big fan of the man in question youll most likely know him from NWA Wildside - Chance Prophet.
PETER) : Thanks for this interview, Chance. Tell us a little about your childhood.
CHANCE) : Well, l I was raised up in church straight from the get-go. I was raised the son of a coal miner and a nurse. I became a born-again Christian in Middle School. I went to prep school and graduated as prayer club president, and lettered in baseball and wrestling. Im currently in college doing Graphic Design studies while balancing a career in wrestling. Oh, and I just celebrated my 25th birthday. That about sums it up so far for me.
PETER) : Finally, someone a little closer to my age; even if I am that bit older! When did you first view wrestling?
CHANCE) : My earliest memory is of my Grandpa sitting me down to watch WWF Saturday Night's Main Event when I was six years old. Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage vs. King Kong Bundy and Bad News Brown in a steel cage.
PETER) : Did you know you wanted to be a wrestler, or did it just kind of happen by surprise?
CHANCE) : I knew it, it was something I had to do. My brother and I would constantly get in trouble for hurting each other, mainly from Shake Rattle n' Rolls on the kitchen floor!
PETER) : How did you get your first break in the business?
CHANCE) : I was in training and a promoter needed an extra body for a tag match and battle royal. So I made my debut in front of a screaming crowd of 28 people in a basketball gymnasium.
PETER) : To see you where you are now, from that; is proof hard work and dedication can get you to a higher level. Who trained you to wrestle?
CHANCE) : Mainly Adorable Danny Ray, but I received training at the Appalachian Professional Wrestling School in Oak Hill, WV.
PETER) : What were your first matches like?
CHANCE) : Old School personified and short as can be. I never was that nervous when it came to getting out there in front of a crowd, but I did start becoming a little more cautious. I received 3 concussions in my first year, so I had to learn to wrestle a more intelligent match.
PETER) : Which takes a lot of maturity at a younger age, as many believe theyre immune to pain or somehow it wont affect them. What is your favourite match that youve been involved in so far?
CHANCE) : My favourite match would be a tie between working AJ Styles for the NWA World Title, and my first televised match for NWA Wildside against their former Heavyweight Champ, Onyx.
PETER) : Who are your better friends in the business?
CHANCE) : Kris King, JD Escalade, Trik Nasty, Flash Fury (get well bud), Juggulator, Bill Behrens, Danny Ray, Joey Morton, Eric Darkstorm, Shane Matthews, Brad Rictor, Chase Stevens, Chris Draven, Jake Layton...I have a lot of good friends.
PETER) : What would you consider your lowest point in wrestling so far?
CHANCE) : Paying for a $3000 operation on my hand.
PETER) : What do you like to do in your spare time?
CHANCE) : I don't really have that much spare time anymore, but when I do get it its spent working out, doing graphic work, talking with A.S.K., hanging with friends, and going to church.
PETER) : What five words would you feel describe you best?
CHANCE) : Faithful, driven, intense, reliable, dedicated.
PETER) : What are your main plans for the future?
CHANCE) : Working to get a regular gig with TNA, to get college out of the way, and hopefully marrying my babe (barring I don't screw it up).
PETER) : What are your thoughts on WWE and TNA, and the indy's?
CHANCE) : WWE has let a lot of quality talent go recently, hopefully they have something big in store that'll set the wrestling world on edge again. TNA is making some great strides towards more exposure and hopefully breaking out further into the mainstream. The three times I was there I loved the product as both a worker and as a fan of the sport. The indy's need to really pull together. I hear a lot of talk about an attempt at territories coming back to the States, and I hope its more than just rumour for the wrestlers' sakes. It would benefit everyone in the wrestling world in the long run.
PETER) : A very true statement. Who do you like to watch and learn from?
CHANCE) : Right now I'm really into AJ Styles and Chris Benoit. I study the Great Muta more than anyone to tell the truth though.
PETER) : And to finish, is there anything you'd like to promote, or anyone you'd like to thank?
CHANCE) : Shameless self-promotion first: www.chanceprophet.com , and then I'd like to thank everyone that's supported me and given me a little bit of their life by taking part in my journey. And of course, I'd like to thank God for giving me life, salvation, and a wonderful sport like wrestling to perform in. Thanks for the interview!
PETER) : The pleasure is mine. Thanks once again, and all the best for the future.
