Wrestling Then and Now the Movie!

DVD Review WSU No Limits – August 22, 2009 – Boonton Elks Lodge, Boonton, NJ
Available at WSUWrestling.com

The DVD starts off with a promo by Jana talking about Latasha taking what was hers and the two choices she has of either laying down and letting Jana take her championship of getting a severe beat down.

Latasha, with her Spirit title, responds to Jana’s threats.

Rick Cataldo invites the viewers to his wedding shower. Why? I don’t know.

Brooke Carter introduces her new partner, Alicia, and talks about their match tonight with Rain and Angel Orsini.

Roxxie Cotton talks about her match with Amber later tonight. At least I think that’s what she was talking about.

Amber is up next talking about her match with Roxxie.

The first match is a #1 Contenders Match for the Spirit Title featuring Amber vs. Roxie Cotton.
Amber dominated the opening minutes of the match but Roxxie soon gained the upper hand. The two then battled back and forth until Amber blocked a Mafia kick and countered with an enziguri for the three count. After the match, Rick Cataldo entered the ring and smashed Roxxie’s face into the mat before choking her with his scarf. Annie Social hit the ring to make the save. Annie and Roxxie got on the mic and I think Roxxie challenged Rick to a loser leaves WSU match (the audio was hard to hear). A decent match overall (one of the better ones I have seen Roxxie have) but I am not a fan of men vs women matches or men in general on a “Women’s” show.

Next up, Amber O’Neal makes her WSU debut against Annie Social. Amber immediately gains the advantage with some stomps and chops to Annie. Annie counters but Amber immediately rolls to the ringside floor to avoid Annie. Social eventually pulls Amber back in, by her hair, and starts to dominate. The two women exchange shots and submission moves for the next few minutes. Amber with a backslide into a bridge for a beautiful pinfall. Amber the runs from the ring, looking shocked that she won.

Havok and Hatred (Jessicka and Hailey) enter the ring and explain how their scheduled opponents aren’t available so they are issuing an open challenge to anybody in the back. Enter Cindy Rogers. Rogers was making her return after an injury and introduced her partner, making her WSU debut, the “Portuguese Princess” Ariel! Cindy and Ariel with lots of offense and lots of tags before Havok and Hatred began double teaming and gained the advantage. Havok and Hatred with a double suplex on Rogers. Ariel and Hatred roll to the floor and Havok with a faceplant on Rogers for the three count.

Kylie Pierce and Lea Morrison enter the ring. Kylie got on the mic. The audio was hard to hear and the two commentators talking over her didn’t help much. It turns out Kylie is mad because Lea got a shot in the Spirit tournament and didn’t give her spot to Kylie. Kylie attacks Lea but Lea fights back, causing Kylie to roll out of the ring. I guess the match is on! The two women begin to brawl at ringside until Kyle brings the fight back into the ring. Lea is able to mount a little (very little) offense before Kylie hits a pumphandle slam for the win.

Next up is a WSU Spirit Title Match between the champion, Latasha and Jana. The two used to tag as the “Soul Sisters” but their subsequent feud led up to Latasha defeating Jana to win the Spirit title. Now, Jana wants revenge and the title. Jana attacks as Latasha is entering the ring but Latasha catches her. The fight spills out of the ring and into the locker room and out the side door to the parking lot. The two reenter the building, using the front door, and Jana pushes Latasha into the ring post head first. Both women are down, exhausted on the floor. They make their way back into the ring where Jana goes for the Jana Vice but Latasha rolls her up with a small package for the victory.

Missy’s Manor Presents The Wedding Shower of Ref Hanson and Rick Cataldo. I don’t think I need to give my opinions of using men on a “Women’s” wrestling show yet again, so I won’t. This segment lasted nearly 15 minutes. That’s longer than any match on the DVD thus far. The sound is almost inaudible, which makes a segment like this almost worthless on a DVD unless you can read lips or enjoy mimes. The crowd started doing the “Na na na na goodbye” chant but, since I couldn’t hear what was being said, I have no idea who was leaving. Boring chants soon followed. VERY long story short… Loser Leaves WSU between Cataldo and Roxxie at the next show and Missy Sampson against Hanson.

Next up is the WSU Tag Team Title match. The challengers, Angel Orsini and Rain take on the champions, Alicia and Brooke Carter. Both teams battled back and forth. Brooke looked out of place in the ring with three women that have so much experience. Brooke took most of the punishment as Rain and Angel took turns in the ring against her. When Alicia finally made the tag she accidentally clotheslined the ref. Rain brought in a steel chair and told Angel to use it on Brooke. Angel refused so Rain used the chair on Brooke just in time for the ref to see it and call for the disqualification.

The main event was a No Time Limit WSU Championship match between Mercedes Martinez and challenger Nikki Roxx. The match lasted close to 35 minutes and was exactly what would be expected from two of the best women in the sport today. No need giving the blow by blow breakdown. I suggest you just watch it for yourself and see how it is supposed to be done. Post match, Mercedes and Nikki hug only to be attacked by Rain and Angel Orsini. Mercedes then challenges them to a tag match against her and Nikki at the next show.

The DVD concludes with post show promos by Jana, Kylie Pierce, Alicia and Brooke Carter, Annie Social and Roxxie Cotton, Amber, and Jassica Havock and Hailey Hatred.

With the exception of the Missy's Manor segment the dvd was quite enjoyable. The matches were all solid and the main event stole the show.
